Two prominent figures within the IUKF are George Mattson Sensei and Lionel Reynaud Sensei, whose contributions have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s legacy.
George Mattson Sensei
George Mattson Sensei is a pivotal figure in the history of Uechi-Ryu Karate. Often referred to as the “Father of Uechi-Ryu Karate in America,” Mattson Sensei was the first Westerner to bring this Okinawan martial art to the United States.
He began his training in Okinawa during the 1950s while serving in the U.S. military.
Under the tutelage of Ryuko TOMYOSE, he honed his skills and developed a deep appreciation for the art’s traditions and philosophies.
In 1958, Mattson Sensei returned to the United States and opened the first Uechi-Ryu dojo in Boston.
His dedication to teaching and spreading the art led to the publication of The Way of Karate, one of the earliest English-language books on Uechi-Ryu.
This seminal work helped introduce the principles of Uechi-Ryu to a broader audience, laying the foundation for its growth in the West.
George Mattson Sensei’s commitment to excellence and innovation led him to establish the IUKF, ensuring that Uechi-Ryu Karate practitioners around the world could benefit from standardized training and testing practices.
Through seminars, black belt grading events, and his mentorship of countless students, Mattson Sensei has left an indelible mark on the martial arts community.

Lionel Reynaud Sensei
Lionel Reynaud Sensei is another esteemed instructor and leader within the IUKF.
Based in Europe, Reynaud Sensei has played a vital role in expanding the reach of Uechi-Ryu Karate across the continent.
Known for his technical precision, deep understanding of the art, and dedication to his students, he has become a respected figure in the international Uechi-Ryu community.
Reynaud Sensei’s teaching emphasizes the integration of traditional principles with modern training methods (Based on his biomechanics skills).
He is particularly known for his ability to inspire students to develop not only their physical skills but also their mental and spiritual resilience.
